 Edgewater Neighborhood

The Edgewater neighborhood is distinguished by its dramatic Lake Erie frontage, tree-lined streets, beautiful homes and a vibrant Clifton Boulevard Historic District. Edgewater residents have direct access to Edgewater Park and its beaches by foot or bike. RTA’s Cleveland State Line provides a speedy connection to Downtown.

Clifton Boulevard and Detroit Avenue, both historic streetcar routes, are lined with many locally- and LGBTQ-owned businesses. These commercial districts stretch westward into the City of Lakewood. Clifton is home to well-known restaurants, while Detroit Avenue fosters alternative and jazz music scenes as well as Studio West 117’s LGBTQ-affirming spaces.

The neighborhood existed as part of the Village of West Cleveland from 1871 until its annexation to Cleveland in 1894. It became known in the last years of the 19th century for its estates of wealthy Clevelanders, such as Marcus Hanna. Large apartment buildings stand along much of Clifton Boulevard, Lake Avenue, and Detroit Avenue. There is some industry located along the rail line that makes up the neighborhood’s southern edge.

The Edgewater neighborhood logo (above) is the result of a collaborative project by residents and Northwest Neighborhoods. The ornamental type references the area’s stately facades, and the wave path is an inviting homage to our region’s shared waterfront. The willow leaf icons represent residents’ favorite willow tree at Edgewater Park’s shore, visible from the bluffs of the neighborhood.
